Thank you!

Hello, Fellow Democrats  -

We, of the Staunton & Augusta County Democratic Committees, Lynn for Virginia and Michele for Delegate Campaigns, want to send out a personal thank you to our donors for their generous contributions toward our successful November 7, 2017, Election Night Party!

Of course, it didn't hurt that our Democratic statewide ticket of Northam, Fairfax and Herring WON and we regain a strong foothold (if not a majority) in the Virginia House of Delegates!

What a terrific fight was fought by our two exceptional Virginia District House of Delegates candidates: Michele Edwards (20th) and Angela Lynn (25th).  Our local Democratic candidate's positive and efficient campaigns resulted in a strong ground breaking percentage of total votes cast. Their ethical and well thought out campaigns are extremely encouraging to us all as we look toward the future and a break through the gerrymander lines around our districts.

On election night, we experienced a packed private banquet hall as about 250 anticipating Democratic voters flowed through Mill Street's White Star Tavern during the course of this special Democratic event.

Mill Street Grill's donated their upstairs private banquet area, White Star Tavern.  The atmosphere of their tavern is quaint, warm and welcoming. It was just perfect for our group of enthusiastic voters as we all eagerly watched the polling results on Big Screen TVs, enjoyed scrumptious food and a cash bar.

Everyone mentioned the especially delicious buffet of widely assorted finger foods contributed by each of our creative food donors:

•    Mill Street Grill
•    Cranberry's Grocery and Eatery
•    The Pampered Palate
•    Nu-Beginnings - The Store
•    Baja Bean
•    Newtown Bakery
•    Anonymous Staunton Chef

Thank you so much for your generous donation(s) creating a successful Democratic Election Celebration enjoyed by all!

What a GREAT NIGHT for Virginia DEMOCRATS!

Sincerely  from -
David Bottenfield, Chair, Staunton Democratic Committee
Frank Nolen, Chair, Augusta County Democratic Committee

Our View: We endorsed, but you have to vote on Tuesday

Staunton NewsLeaderElectioneering is in its final hours ahead of Tuesday's general election.

Last week we unveiled our endorsements in three key local races.

-In the 20th District House of Delegates race, we recommend Michele Edwards, who we believe will be a strong voice for improving, not dismantling, public schools.

Letter to the Editor: Voting Edwards a way to push back against divisiveness

Staunton NewsLeaderI have recently been door-to-door canvassing for the upcoming election, and it has been a rewarding experience. As a canvasser, one is given names and addresses, but you don’t know who is going to open the door – Republican, Democrat, or Independent.

This week, I had a wonderful conversation with a Vietnam War veteran who happens to be a Republican, and I am a Democrat. After a good 20 minutes of chatting about our lives and experiences, as well as our concerns, we found that we had more in common than different. We both feel that gerrymandering of voting district lines is wrong, knowing that both parties have done this, and feel that it needs to be corrected. We both are convinced that financial donations to political candidates should come from citizens, not from businesses or corporations because we want those representing us to have citizens’ best interests as their agenda. We both are not happy with what is going on in Washington right now, particularly at the top; and we both agree that we feel embarrassed for our country.

There were areas we did not discuss and topics we knew we would not agree upon. But we departed with smiles and a warm handshake, as I thanked him for his service to our country, and he thanked me for my work that day. As I was leaving, he told me he might become an Independent, but not a Democrat.

I have been privileged and inspired working these recent months with the Michele Edwards campaign for Delegate of District 20. Michele committed to a very positive campaign from the start. She pledged to take no contributions from businesses or corporations because that is not who she plans to represent. Michele wants to work across the aisles, regardless of party, because the divisiveness in this country during the last year or more was her inspiration for running for office. She cares about each and every citizen and is committed to working for and meeting with her constituents throughout the year.

I encourage you to vote for Michele Edwards on Nov. 7.

Vox: The Virginia elections will decide if 400,000 people get health care

VOX Media

KEY POINT: If enough Democrats get elected to the legislature, they can expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Whether Democrats can regain the statehouse, redraw Virginia’s congressional districts, and fulfill one of Obamacare’s promises will depend on dozens of below-the-radar statehouse races.
